Environmental
Information System: (ENVIS)
Centre has been set up by the Ministry of
Environment, Forests & Climate Change, Government of India
in different educational institutions, government
organizations and non-governmental organizations
by covering several thematic areas in environment
and associated fields. In order to strengthen
its vast network for sustainable development
on several thematic areas, the Ministry
is implementing a project on Sustainable
Development Networking Program
(SDNP) under the India – Canada Environmental
Facility (ICEF) Small Grant Programme.
The
United Nations Environment Programme:
(UNEP) established in 1972 at Nairobi, Kenya
is aimed to encourage sustainable development
through sound environmental practices everywhere.
According to Brundtland Commission (1987),
Sustainable development is defined as "development
that meets the needs of the present without
compromising the ability of future generations
to meet their own needs". In general,
sustainable development is development that
takes the impact on the environment into
account and tries to minimize environmental
damage. In order to achieve better sustainable
development and sound environment, pathways
has to be opened for public participation,
wide communication network and cooperation
among all sections of society. Hence, in
the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development
provided a clear message on the role and
responsibility for all sections of society,
with the recurring message repeated over
and over again “real change is most
likely to come with the involvement of ordinary
people". According to the proclamation
“Human beings are at the centre of
concerns for sustainable development. They
are entitled to a healthy and productive
life in harmony with nature”. To address
these issues and how to more closely involve
the affected communities and public interest
groups in a collaborative approach to attain
sustainable development, the Ministry has
identified the ENVIS network partners which
they are working on different thematic areas
in environmental management, based on the
performance of the ENVIS Centre, Ministry
has identified our ENVIS Centre as one of
the Centre on the thematic area “Microorganisms
and Environment Management"
under SDNP-ENVIS of ICEF Small Grant Program.
This project has been executed by the Ministry
of Environment, Forests & Climate Change (EI), Government
of India and co-ordinated
by the Institute for Ocean Management, Anna
University, Chennai.
