The Government has accorded the
highest priority to Agricultural Research. Plan
allocation of the Department of Agriculture Research
and Education has been raised from Rs. 775 crore
in the previous year to Rs.1000 crore for the
current financial year 2004-05. ICAR institutions
and agricultural universities came out with about
50 improved varieties/hybrids of crops. New vaccines
were evolved for control of rinder pest, equine
influenza, IBD and PARVO virus in animals, and
vaccines for Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD), haemorrhagic
septicaemia and sheep pox were improved.
Research
programme on Microorganisms:
A
research programme on Microorganisms is to start
soon at a cost of Rs.200 crore. It will help in
developing varieties/species with desirable traits,
soil enrichment, bio-conversion of organic waste,
pharmaceuticals, post harvest processing, etcd.
One
Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) in each district
The government has decided to
establish at least one Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK)
in each of the 578 rural districts of the country.
The number of KVKs in the country now is 426 and
the remaining rural districts would be covered
during this Plan itself.
Setting
up of National Museum on Agricultural Sciences
The
National Museum on Agricultural Sciences has been
set up to depict the evolution of agriculture
in the sub-continent, the green revolution, and
use of modern technologies in various branches
of agriculture.
Environmental
policy and integrated management refers to areas
in which governmental or international policy
are directed towards improving environmental quality
at the national, regional or global level. While
this subject area is broad, the focus is on the
use of policy mechanisms and techniques aimed
at strengthening human and institutional capacity
to effectively deal with environmental issues.
This might be done, for example, through training
in environmental impact assessment (EIA), through
a policy study in a Ministry of Agriculture, or
guidelines aimed at improved natural resource
management.
This theme includes specific
topics such as: environmental impact assessment
(EIA); national and regional environmental action
plans; implementation of Agenda 21; indicators
of sustainable development; integrated coastal
area management (ICAM); organic agriculture; energy
policy; natural resource conservation; environmental
accounting; life cycle analysis; and indigenous
knowledge.
In view of FAO's mandate, much
of the content relates to the agricultural or
rural dimension of environmental policy and integrated
management. In many cases, the topics are also
directly related to other categories such as environmental
conventions or environmental monitoring and assessment
activities. To the extent possible, the appropriate
links and cross-references are provided.
Environmental Information System (ENVIS) provides national and international
environmental information in the disciplines of pollution control, microorganisms, envis,
toxic chemicals, central and offshore ecology, environmentally sound and appropriate
technology, bio-degradation of wastes and environment management.
