Achievements:

  • Recognizing the research potential, UGC has accorded SAP-DRS status to this Department with a financial support of Rs. 37 lakhs (1995-2000) which has been subsequently extended with a grant of Rs. 49 lakhs for another 5 years (DRS-II phase -2000-2005)

  • In recognition of the research contribution in Environmental Sciences, Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Government of India created Environmental Information System Node (EMCB-ENVIS) in this Department with a grant of Rs. 7.75 lakhs per annum to develop scientific database on Microorganisms and Environment Management, and to disseminate this information through web-enabled mechanisms.

  • In appreciation of the quality of teaching and research outputs in terms of generation of scientific manpower, UGC came forward with a grant of Rs. 59 lakhs under COSIST programme (2002-2007) to upgrade the post-graduate teaching and research facilities of this Department.

  • Recently, the Department of Science and Technology has sponsored the development of infrastructure of this Department with a financial support of Rs. 47 lakhs under DST-FIST programme (2003-2008).

  • The research activities in this Department have attracted funding from various governmental/non-governmental agencies in India (DST, DBT, CSIR, UGC, DOD, DOEn&F, DAE) as well as International funding agencies (European Economic Commission, Brussels, Belgium; International Foundation for Sciences, Sweden).

  • UGC approved this Department to take up teaching extension activity in Zoology under COSIP-ULP in 1979, involving curriculum development, preparation of laboratory manuals and text books, updating college laboratory, and establishment of a COSIP-library for Zoology teachers.
